Engagement rate tells you how many followers actually react to your posts. Enter your average likes and comments and your follower count, and the calculator places your rate against the median and percentiles for accounts of your size.

Use the average of your last 10 to 15 posts.

Your engagement rate

3.01%

Above the median for your tier. For Micro (10K to 100K): median 0.97%, top quartile above 3.20%.

Formula: (average likes + average comments) / followers x 100.

How to use it

  1. Enter your follower count.
  2. Enter the average likes and the average comments per post across your last 10 to 15 posts.
  3. Read your rate and where it sits on the meter against your follower tier.
  4. Repeat with a different period or post type to see what performs better.

A worked example

Example: 12,000 followers

  • Average 340 likes and 21 comments per post, so 361 interactions.
  • 361 divided by 12,000, times 100, is 3.01%.
  • In the micro tier (10K to 100K) the median is 0.97% and the 75th percentile is 3.20%, so this account sits above the median and just under the top quarter.

How engagement rate is calculated here

The formula is average likes plus comments per post, divided by followers, times 100. It is the most common definition and the one used by the benchmark source below. Other tools use reach or views as the base, or add saves and shares, so compare numbers only within one formula.

Use the average of your last 10 to 15 posts rather than one post, and exclude paid promotion if you want an organic figure.

Where the benchmarks come from

The tier comparison uses the Instagram table from IQFluence's 2026 engagement benchmark report, updated 25 September 2026. It covers all active creators with a measurable engagement rate and at least 1,000 followers, and uses the same formula as this calculator.

The medians are much lower than the averages, because a few viral or giveaway-heavy accounts pull the average up. Use the median to judge a typical result. Rates vary by niche, format and audience, so treat the bands as a reference and not as a target.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using one viral post as your average. Use the median or a longer window.
  • Comparing across formulas. Reach-based and follower-based rates are different measures.
  • Including paid promotion if you want an organic figure.
  • Chasing the average instead of the median. A few very high accounts pull the average up.

Questions about this tool

What is a good Instagram engagement rate?

It depends on your size. Above the median for your tier is a reasonable bar, and above the 75th percentile is in the top quarter. The table on this page shows the figures for each tier.

Why is my tier not shown?

The benchmark data starts at 1,000 followers, so accounts below that get the rate without a tier comparison.

Does this tool read my account?

No. You enter the numbers yourself and nothing is fetched, stored or sent.

Should I use reach instead of followers?

You can, but compare only with benchmarks that use the same base. This calculator and its benchmark use followers.

How often should I check it?

Monthly is enough for most accounts. Weekly numbers swing with single posts.
