Instagram Story Reply Auto DM: How to Set It Up
Turn every "Reply PRICE" on your Story into a useful DM, without opening each conversation by hand.
You post a Story that says "Reply PRICE and I'll send you the details." It works. By lunch there are dozens of replies sitting in your inbox, all asking for the same thing. You copy the same message, paste the same link, and repeat it until the Story disappears. Meanwhile, the people who replied first have been waiting for hours.
An Instagram Story reply auto DM fixes the waiting part. When someone replies to your Story, a prepared message goes out straight away with the link, price list or booking page they asked for. You still read the conversations that need a person. You just stop typing the same answer forty times.
This guide covers what Story reply automation is, how it differs from comment-to-DM, how to set it up in InboxLoop, Story ideas you can use this week, and the mistakes that make these automations feel spammy.
What is an Instagram Story reply auto DM?
Instagram Story reply auto DM is an automation that sends a prepared direct message when someone replies to your Story. Because a Story reply already arrives in your inbox, the automation continues a conversation the viewer started, instead of messaging someone out of the blue.
Instagram does not offer this inside the app. You need a tool that connects to your Instagram Professional account through Meta's official authorization and receives Story reply events. The tool checks each reply against your rules, such as a keyword, and sends the configured message when it matches.
Story replies vs comment-to-DM: which should you use?
Both automations deliver a DM after someone shows interest. The difference is where that interest happens and how long your content stays visible.
| What matters | Story reply | Comment to DM |
|---|---|---|
| Where people respond | Privately, in your DMs | Publicly, under a post or Reel |
| How long it runs | While the Story is live, unless you add it to a Highlight | For as long as the post keeps getting comments |
| Public reply | No, the whole exchange stays in DM | Optional reply under the comment |
| Works best for | Time-limited offers, launches, daily specials, questions people prefer to ask privately | Evergreen guides, product links, lead magnets on Reels |
Most accounts end up using both. A Reel collects comments for weeks, while Stories handle what is happening today. If you have not set up the comment version yet, our guide to auto-DMing Instagram comments walks through it.
Three Story triggers you can automate
- Story reply with a keyword: the automation runs only when the reply contains a word you chose, such as PRICE or MENU. Use this when your Story asks for something specific.
- Any Story reply: every reply to the selected Story starts the automation. Use this only when the Story has one obvious purpose, such as a launch countdown, and almost every reply will be about it.
- Story mention: the automation starts when someone mentions your account in their own Story. It is a good moment to say thank you and share something useful.
A simple rule for choosing between the first two: if people might reply with a question, a complaint or a compliment, use a keyword. "Any reply" on a general Story means someone who writes "your delivery was late" receives your sales message, which is worse than no reply at all.
How to set up Story reply auto DM in InboxLoop
InboxLoop is free during Early Access and includes separate Story Reply and Story Mention templates. Here is the full flow.
1. Connect an Instagram Professional account
Your account needs to be a Creator or Business account. Create your InboxLoop account and connect Instagram through Meta's authorization screen. You approve the permissions there, and InboxLoop never asks for your Instagram password.
2. Choose the Story Reply template
Open Automations, pick Story Reply and give it a name you will recognise later, such as "Diwali sale PRICE replies". Clear names matter once you have several automations running.
3. Pick the Story
Turn on "Select specific media" and sync your Stories to limit the automation to one Story. Leave it off if the same keyword should work across your Stories, for example a MENU keyword you use every day.
4. Add keywords, or allow any reply
Add up to 20 keywords. Include the obvious variations people type, such as PRICE, PRICES and RATE. Or switch on "Any story reply" if every reply to this Story should get the same response.
5. Decide on the reaction and opening message
The template can react to the person's reply so they know it was seen. You can then add an optional opening message with a button. The rest of the flow waits until the person taps it, which keeps the conversation clearly in their hands.
6. Add a follow check if it fits
An optional step can ask the person to follow you and check the follow when they confirm. Use it for free resources where a follow is a fair exchange. Skip it for customers asking about an order or a price; making them follow first adds friction to a sale.
7. Write the main DM
The DM can be up to 1,000 characters, with an optional image and up to three link buttons. You can personalise it with the person's first name. If you are showing several products, add a product carousel in the DM with up to 10 cards instead of a long list of links.
8. Add an optional follow-up
A follow-up can go out after a delay you choose, up to 23 hours later. Use it for something genuinely helpful, such as "Slots for this week close tonight", not for repeating the same pitch.
9. Preview, publish and test
Check the phone preview, publish, then reply to the Story from a second account you control. Confirm the reaction, the button, the DM and every link. Only then share the Story widely or add it to a Highlight.
6 Story reply ideas with ready-to-edit DMs
Tell people exactly what to reply. A keyword on the Story itself works far better than hoping viewers guess what to type.
Reply “PRICE”
On the Story: Reply PRICE for today's rates
DM: Here are the current prices for the pieces in today's Story. Tap below to see sizes and availability.
Reply “MENU”
On the Story: Reply MENU for this weekend's specials
DM: Here is this weekend's specials menu. The second button opens table booking.
Reply “EARLY”
On the Story: Launching Friday. Reply EARLY for first access
DM: You're on the early list. Here is the launch page so you can see everything that's included.
Reply “SLOT”
On the Story: 3 consultation slots left this week. Reply SLOT
DM: Here is the booking page with this week's open slots. Pick a time that suits you.
Reply “PDF”
On the Story: Reply PDF for the full checklist
DM: Here is the checklist from today's Story. Save it so you can come back to it later.
Reply “SIZE”
On the Story: Not sure about your size? Reply SIZE
DM: Here is our size guide with measurements for every style. Reply here if you're between two sizes.
Restaurants, boutiques, coaches and creators each use these a little differently. See how restaurants use Instagram automation for menus and bookings, or how digital product sellers pair a Story countdown with a launch keyword.
Story mention auto DM: thank the people who tag you
When a customer posts your product in their Story and tags you, they are doing you a favour in front of their own followers. A Story Mention automation can react to the mention and send a short thank-you message, for example: "Thanks for sharing us in your Story, {first_name}! Here's a little something for your next order."
Keep mention messages warm and short. Do not promise to repost their Story unless someone on your team will actually do it, and do not ask for anything in return. For creators, a mention flow is also a simple way to share a resource with people who are already talking about you.
See what happens after the DM
Sending the message is only half the story. Turn on tracking for a link button and InboxLoop records total clicks, unique clickers, repeat clicks and a click history for each contact. Contacts are grouped as Exploring, Warm or High Intent based on how many times they clicked in the selected period.
Treat these numbers as signals, not sales. A click is not a purchase, and someone with three clicks may simply be comparing options. Our Instagram link tracking guide explains exactly what each metric counts.
Mistakes that make Story automations feel spammy
- Hiding the keyword. If the Story doesn't say what to reply, people reply with emojis and nothing happens.
- Using "any reply" on a general Story. Questions and complaints get a sales message. Use keywords unless the Story has one purpose.
- Running two tools on the same Story. Overlapping automations can send duplicate DMs. Turn off the old trigger before testing the new one.
- Forgetting expired offers. A Story in a Highlight keeps getting replies. Pause or update the automation when the offer ends.
- Burying the link. One line of context, then the button. Long paragraphs before the link lose people.
- Skipping the test. A broken link sent to a hundred people is hard to take back. Always test from a second account first.
Is Story reply automation allowed?
Story replies are started by the viewer, and tools built on Meta's official APIs are the appropriate way to respond to them. That does not make any tool a shield against restrictions. Your messages still need to be relevant, expected and within Meta's messaging policies. Our Instagram automation safety guide explains which safeguards matter and which promises no tool can make.
Other tools also support Story reply triggers. If you are comparing options, our InboxLoop vs Manychat comparison lists what each one documents, with sources.
Automate your Story replies with InboxLoop
Set up a Story Reply or Story Mention automation from a ready-made template, add your keyword and link, and test it before your next Story goes live.
InboxLoop is free during Early Access, with unlimited automations. Instagram messaging rules and technical limits still apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I auto DM people who reply to my Instagram Story?
Yes. Connect an Instagram Professional account to a tool that uses Meta's official APIs, choose the Story and the keywords, and the tool sends your prepared DM when a reply matches.
Does it work when someone mentions me in their Story?
Yes. InboxLoop has a separate Story Mention template that starts when someone mentions your account in their Story. It can react and send a DM.
Can I limit the automation to one Story?
Yes. Turn on specific media selection and choose the Story. Leave it off if the same keyword should work across your Stories.
What happens if someone replies without the keyword?
That automation does not send anything unless you turned on "Any story reply". The reply stays in your inbox for you to answer personally.
Can the DM include a link?
Yes. Add up to three link buttons with HTTPS destinations, or a product carousel with up to 10 cards. Tracking can be turned on for supported buttons.
Do I need a Professional account?
Yes. Meta's messaging integrations require a Creator or Business account. Switching is free in Instagram's settings.
Is InboxLoop free for Story automations?
InboxLoop is free during Early Access, including Story Reply and Story Mention automations. This is not a lifetime pricing promise, and Instagram's messaging rules still apply.
